Important Tax News for Teachers!

Deduction for Education Expenses

Educators can deduct up to $250 of eligible expenses as an adjustment to income even if they do not itemize deductions for expenses paid or incurred during tax year 2005.

If you and your spouse are filing jointly and both of you were educators, the maximum deduction is $500.  Neither spouse can deduct more than $250.  See form 1040, Line 23.

Eligible expenses include un-reimbursed expenses for such items as books, supplies, computer equipment or software, and supplementary materials. Amounts in excess of the $250/$500 caps may still be eligible as deductible expenses on Schedule A, Form 1040.  In the past, the deduction was limited to expenses exceeding two percent of adjusted gross income, and it could not be included as a deduction if a taxpayer used one of the standard deduction amounts. For details, visit the IRS website at :  www.irs.gov.

 Information about teacher certification:

A provisional teaching certificate is awarded to a teacher when they have not completed all of the requirements for certification but are within 12 hours of completion. Some examples are:

  • A teacher is fully certified in another state but when they apply for reciprocity in Missouri they are missing a praxis exam or a couple of courses.
  • A teacher has been in an education program and is near graduation. If they are hired by a school district and are within 12 hours of completion they can be awarded a provisional certificate.

A provisional is a two year, non-renewable certificate.

A temporary authorization certificate is awarded to a teacher when they are farther away from completion than 12 hours. In order to qualify the person must have a bachelor's degree in the subject area to be taught or a closely related field. They must have a 2.5 grade point average overall and in their major area. The temporary authorization is a one year renewal certificate. In order to renew the person must complete a minimum of 9 hours of coursework from their study plan.

A Special School District teacher may be paid at the substitute pay rate if one of the following conditions exists:

  • A new hire begins the school year without having submitted all paperwork necessary to secure certification. The certificate does not have to be issued, but all paperwork must have been submitted to DESE in order for a teacher to receive their regular salary.
  • A current employee was notified that their certificate was going to expire and they did not complete the necessary paperwork to renew.

If the teacher is dropped to sub pay they will receive $105.00 per day until their certificate is issued . Remember, maintaining current certification is the responsibility of the teacher. Don't rely exclusively on reminders from the District to renew your certification!  Go to www.dese.state.mo.us to check your certification status on-line.

Free Resources “Just for Teachers”
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has a new “Just for Teachers” section of their Web site devoted to helping teachers save and invest wisely for their retirement. It has a number of useful articles, calculators and other resources to help de-mystify the choices that teachers must make in contributing to their retirement savings plans. They also offer a “Teachers Care Package” of useful brochures which will be mailed upon request. In addition to these resources, the SEC Web site provides information to help teachers communicate personal finance concepts in the classroom. For more information go to www.sec.gov/investor/teachers.shtml .
