| Important Tax News for Teachers! Deduction for Education Expenses Educators can deduct up to $250 of eligible expenses as an adjustment to income even if they do not itemize deductions for expenses paid or incurred during tax year 2005. If you and your spouse are filing jointly and both of you were educators, the maximum deduction is $500. Neither spouse can deduct more than $250. See form 1040, Line 23. Eligible expenses include un-reimbursed expenses for such items as books, supplies, computer equipment or software, and supplementary materials. Amounts in excess of the $250/$500 caps may still be eligible as deductible expenses on Schedule A, Form 1040. In the past, the deduction was limited to expenses exceeding two percent of adjusted gross income, and it could not be included as a deduction if a taxpayer used one of the standard deduction amounts.
