The REAL cost of the war in Iraq.

This information circulated on the internet two years ago when the cost of the Iraq war stood at only $250,000,000,000.  The current cost is over half a trillion dollars (that's a 5 with 11 zeros after it)!  But for the $250 billion spent by 2006 we could have had:

33 million children in a Head Start program

149 million children with health insurance

4.3 million additional public school teachers

12 million scholarships to four-year colleges

Immunizations for every child in the world for 83 years.

These numbers are big and they reflect that there is only a shortage of "political will" - not funding- to create a Great Public School for Every Child!

November 17, 2006 You Made a Difference on Election Day. Thanks!

Teachers, education support professionals and friends of public education made a difference on November 7 in dozens of down-to-the-wire governors, senate and congressional races. Thanks to you, we have more elected officials who will support public schools and who believe that great public schools are a basic right for every child.

Any way you measure it, last week's midterm elections were a victory for students, educators and public schools. Some highlights include:

• NEA-recommended candidates won in 14 of the 21 gubernatorial races we targeted in partnership with state affiliates, for a 67 percent success rate.
  
• In the 15 U.S. Senate races we targeted, 14 of our recommended candidates won, for a success rate of 93 percent.

• Seventy-two percent (18 of 25) of our recommended candidates in targeted House races succeeded.
  
• Four high-profile recommended candidates who won (Ted Strickland for Ohio governor, Chet Culver for Iowa governor, Harry Mitchell in Arizona's Eighth Congressional District and Tim Walz in Minnesota's First Congressional District) are current or former NEA members.
  
• Minimum wage ballot measures won in each of the six states in which they were on the ballot: AZ, CO, MO, MT, NV and OH.
  
• The so-called Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR), a back-door attempt to starve public services — especially public education and public safety — went down in defeat in the three states where it appeared on the ballot: ME, NE and OR.
  
• The "65 Percent Deception," which would put the jobs of many education support professionals at risk, was defeated in Colorado.
